What about lasers?

Annie! My heart! I don't think lasers really fitted into an inconvenient truth* post, but let me know what you're after and I'll get a post together soon. x

*arguably, it IS an inconvenient truth that any celebrity whose skin you admire is probably dropping some serious $ on some sort of regular facial laser treatment, but my posts run pretty long as it is, without me getting into the financial inequality of the skincare/beauty world. That IS an interesting idea for a post though, and I may run with it at some point.

Yes, this is a very good point. 25 years of religiously cleansing, moisturising, regular facials and more recently, serumming (can I make that a verb?), did not get me the results a couple of rounds of laser did. And I AM most likely overpaying for my face routine (currently trying out the Rationale range) but I struggle to stop - Because 1) my genes delivered me shitty sun sensitive, teenage acne, rosacea pustule break outs, and large pores. Thanks Mum and Dad. 2) I feel better about all of the above when I’m taking care of my skin, and 3) I’m vulnerable when I go for my regular facials and they tell me that the product that they push is THE answer to the above genetic condition and how much better my skin already looks after just their hour of applying aforementioned products. 😂😭💸

Thank yooooooouuuu ❤️ I also forgot to mention, I agree with you entirely on the routine. I think my skin is 1000% better than it would have otherwise been, because I have taken care of it over the years. I just got a ten year improvement out of six months of BBL Hero Forever Young laser treatments, and my skin texture feels like it did when I was 30. And now I’m stuck not knowing what to use on my skin, because I started the Rationale products at the same time as I used the laser. I’m nervous to stop the products, but they are really expensive 😅 and I asked about the serums I’ve been using by the Ordinary, and they said the active ingredient is the same but the things that ‘transport’ it is different and that’s why expensive products are better. Baloney?? Help! Ok - enough of my skin neurosis for one day 🤪 thanks for listening x

Stop those products once they run out. The 2 serums are gylcerin-based (glycerin is great, but literally the cheapest humectant you can buy) with a bunch of essential oils to bulk it out. The 'transport' in the #1 serum is olive oil.

You can buy a lot of oilve oil for 160AUD.

There's also zero buzz about this brand in the skincare communities, even though it's obvious that there have been multiple PR efforts over the last 5 years.

You can do as good as or better for cheaper.

Product/brand recos are out on friday.

And for teenagers?

Hiiii! There are no inconvenient skincare truths that are specific to teengares than I can think of. Other than the inconvenient truth that your teenager is likely to have 'better' skin than you as their parent, because their cell turnover is much faster. I talk about cell turnover here https://notbornwithit.substack.com/p/wtf-is-exfoliation-anyway and there's a breakdown by age group in the footnotes. (The best stuff is often in the footnotes 😂)

In terms of "what routine for teenagers", there'll be a post soon that talks about establishing a skincare routine, to tie all of these recent skincare posts together somewhat. But there's really no difference in terms of approach. It's still: cleansing once or twice daily (the way you determine frequency is too long for me to get into in the comments section, but will be in a post soon), moisturise twice daily, SPF in the morning and then layering in any products to address skinf concerns, which in teenagers are more likely to be skin conditions (e.g. acne, eczema) rather than "ageing" or "dehydration".

I would urge all parents to get their kids into a cleanse-and-SPF routine every morning and a cleanse-and-moisturise routine every night from an early age. I don't have children but have witnessed extreme reluctance at any form of cleanng themselves when they're younger, so just do what you can 😊 . Awareness and understanding of one's skin is not something a person should have to work out from the internet once they reach adulthood and - same as pension contributions - the earlier you start, the more you reap the benefits when you're older.
